I am having problem with my burner. It is a new Verbatim 52x24x52. I am using Nero 5 and updated to the latest version. The problem I have is the burner would pass simulation, complete burning process etc but the resulting disc cannot be read. Both my CD drive and CDRW drive cannot read the resulting disks. If I ask Nero to verifity data after burning, it would say "failed to mount disk" or something at the verifying stage.
I've read about the windows XP bug and installed Q320174_WXP_SP1_x86_ENU.exe but didn't solve the problem. After I installed the win fix, I've only tried disc-at-once, no multisession, finalize CD setting. After half a dozen failed burns and wasted cdr's, I thought I would ask before I try with different burning settings...
Thanks!

Try slowing down the burning speed. I would set it to the lowest speed and use a few brands of different media. If that doesn't resolve your issue, then try another program.
Yes, I've tried burning speeds of 32x, 16x, and 8x. Didn't make any difference.
Yeap, I'll go and buy some CDRs. Current I am using some of my brother's CDRs that do have any printed lable. Nero Info Tool reports they are Postech, 79 mins CD-Rs.
I went to Verbatim's website and didn't see any firmware update; might be I didn't look hard enough. I'll go check again.
Thanks all for suggestions. I'll report back here if I discover something.

I made the CDRW as master, and the only driver on the 2nd IDE channel. CD burning still failed but I got more detailed error message this time (tried 2 times with different CDR's, a non branded and a Memorex).
(by the way, Verbatim's tech support is really bad. Actually I should say non-existance. They've stopped their phone support, there is no tech support email, their web support page is broken for 2 days now... I've sent an email to their sales department and hopeful get a reply)

Seemed like a hardware failure to me. 8x burning also failed with similiar but not exactly the same error (no Mechanism Control Task Error when doing 8x)

Tried everything without sucess. No luck even getting in tough with Verbatim tech support, no phone, no email, no web support (broken web site) so I gave up. I returned the burner to Best Buy.
