    Confusion with Athlon 64 and Opteron

    I am thoroughly confused regarding what the nomenclature is for the Athlon 64 and Opteron with their associated meaning - pin number/socket number and Mhz rating. Please educate me regarding this confusing issue. Thanks!

    Opteron: Socket 940 only, integrated dual channel memory controller and 1024kb of L2 cache. Labeled as a series of 3 numbers and intended for workstation and server markets.
    Rating system (if I get this right): Opteron 140 = 1 way, 1.4ghz; 240 = 2 way(SMP), 1.4ghz; 242 = 2 way, 1.6ghz, and so on.

    Athlon64: Socket 745, integrated single channel memory controller with 256kb (or is it 512?) of L2. Rated by PR numbers as with current Athlons and intended for the desktop market. It will be the only K8 based chip to run on non-ECC memory.

    Athlon FX: Socket 940/939 (not sure if S939 will exist). Based on a whole new rating system (that I don't fully understand), the FX will be basically an Opteron for the desktop (1024 L2 and dual channel memory).

    I'm sure there's much more that I've left out, but that's it as I understand it.

    I think it's a little early to pin things down. As I understand it, there are chipsets that will work with all three platforms, althought he sockets are different. That's how odd this situation has become.

    So I don't depend on any of the 'technical' information we have right now. When the stuff is for sale, then it'll be worth trying to figure it all out.

    I look at it more like this:

    1). The Opteron HAS to remain high priced for several reasons: First, it is one of the most potent server CPUs ever devised, to sell it cheap would be to sell it short... and to wreck the profit potential that the high-end market offers. Profit AMD desperately needs.

    2). The Athlon 64 has to be cheap enough to compete well with P4. It doesn't have to WIN, but it must be inexpensive to produce so that it can make a volume impact in the main stream. Only by prooving themselves capable of maintaining marketshare will AMD have any hope of garnering X86-64 support. No one would jump onto a sinking bandwagon (pardon the mixed metaphore).

    3). This leaves AMD in a dilema: There is no way the reduced-cache SC-DDR version of the K8 is going to be a performance crown holder. Even if this chip is able to beat the Northwood, the Prescott will surely beat it. But in order to save production costs (and probably in order to re-use cores with flawed L2 cache or HT links) they need the Athlon 64. The SC-DDR will also make motherboards for this platform extraordinarily easy to design and produce. They will be child's-toy 4-layer designs. However, AMD probably DOES want to make a go at the performance crown in the high-end enthusiast market. Sure, a Opteron 1XX could fit the bill, but AMD doesn't want to be selling top of the line Opteron ANYTHINGS for $450 bucks. Thus, Athlon "FX".

    That's the way I'm looking at it, anyway.
