whats the deal with valve and geforce fx.

looks like i'm sh\t out of luck with the $450 5900 ultra i just bought. i hope like a mug they can fix this FSAA issue with DX9 cards up before release of HL2. it looks like valve is leaning towards ATI on this matter instead of Nvidia.

is an rma in order here?

They have a lot of people working on it, I'm sure they'll get it fixed. The problem is that the most likely solution involves clamping texture coordintates using PS 2.0 instructions. NV3x are slow enough using PS 2.0 as it is and they could probably do without having the resources being allocated to fixing FSAA, especially not in HL2 which will probably be shader-limited.

so basicaly, there's going to be no hope for FSAA, because its easier to clamp texture coordinates in PS 2.0? so, is it still going to look good?

For FSAA to work in HL2 it needs a feature called "centroid sampling" which is supported but not exposed by ATi and not supported at all by nVidia. If they don't have access to it then texture "bleeding" occurs along boundaries where the sampling patterns take values from surrounding textures.

There is no hope for centroid sampling to ever be used with current nVidia hardware, but there is a workaround that uses normal center-sampled MSAA and texture clamping via PS 2.0 that allows FSAA without artifacting. My point was that PS 2.0 is very slow on NV3x hardware and because HL2 will use a lot of pixel shading as it is, nVidia users could probably do without an additional performance hit.

I think the problem they have at the moment only causes very minor artifacting, but obviously as they push the barrier forward from a visual point of view they are going to want to get everything looking as good as possible.

so, in theory, my 9700p would kick the 5900U's arse in PS 2.0 functions? as far as the performance, do you think the 5900U would do well on HL2 w/ the PS 2.0 lack and a performance hit?

would it be worth it, do you think. to revert back to my 9700p when it HL2 comes out? from what i saw last night, doom3 LA didn't run as smoothly as it did on my 9700p. would that be due to the sluggish PS 2.0 performance? or do you think the game just needs to be refined for all graphics chipsets?

would it be a good idea to rma the 5900u and get a 9800p 256mb?

the more and more i use this card and test it and read reviews and other stuff, the more pissed off i get about it.

Well I'm not too keen about commenting because if I remember correctly, you asked whether you should buy it and I was one of the people that said it wasn't worth it.

BUT... I'd stick with it and wait for the Detonator 50s or at least the next few driver sets from nV. A little birdy whispered in my ear today that the 50s will probably be the most significant set of drivers nV have ever released. Legitimate performance increases (especially as far as shader support goes) and a lot, lot more.

thats awesome. i guess i'll hang in there then with it. i've been hearing good things about the 50's too. i'm going to try the 44.67's this afternoon when i get home from work, to see if there's much difference in D3AL.

i've noticed that nvidia's own "last change gas" lags a little with some artifacting going on. of course, it relies mainly on PSing and vertex shading too. maybe the 50's will be such of an improvement they'll just blow everybody away.. dear god i hope so.. thanks MuFu..
