Disk error : ntldr is missing

For some weird reason, I'm unable to boot into any one of the Windows OSes on my system. The usual boot menu of ntloader just wont come up.

It stubbornly says 'disk error' and 'ntldr is missing'. I booted of the XP CD and did the fixmbr thing, still the same error.

I can easily boot into Linux w/ its bootdisk.

A few tries of fixmbr and fixboot led me nowhere. So I thought dumping the ghost image of XP, rebooted and still wouldnt work.

Has my disk really gone bad?

I'll give it another try later tonight. And if things show no progress at all, might reinstall then.

You didn't say what win OS's your using so I'll assume your doing some sort of dual or triple boot, if you have 98 on C then startup with bootdisk and type

    SYS C:

then try the xp cd fixboot command see how you make out.

In addition to what Rangeral said...

I repeatedly had the NTLDR is missing message on a machine on which I upgraded from W98SE to XP. I even got it on a clean install. I never did understand where it came from or why, as its occurence was random. I finally concluded that it had something to do with that issue that W98 is said to have on partitions in excess of 32 GB. I have since reinstalled on a 20GB hard drive and all is fine (earlier installs were all over 32GB).

Bottom line-keep the XP partition under 32GB.

    Hi

I did boot off the Win98 CD, when I tried to acces C:\ it said something like when you're trying to access a raw unformatted partition

Invalid media type reading drive C
    Abort, retry, fail

Well, I just reinstalled the whole thing Yea, I know it was a lame workaround...

It didnt occur to me to try sys c:\, probably it coud have worked.

Thanx for reminding me guys, it's good as new now...

BTW its Win98, XP and RHL 8 here.

This happened to a friend of mine a while back (winxp) ended up re-formatting which was a pain.

Then it happened to me too ..... fortunately after booting from XP CD and repairing it sorted itself out (I always try harder on my own PC )
