help on choosing new HD

well im going ot get myself another harddrive for my main computer soon, ive narrowed it down to either a....

WD CAVIAR 80.0GB INT ATA/100 HD 3.5LP 9MS 2MB 7200RPM OEM

or a

MAXTOR 80GB 7200RPM 2MB 8.5MS ATA133 QUIET VERSION OEM

both 1 year warrrenty, and both $127 so for both my 30gb and 60gb are maxtor drives, and i have not had a single problem with these drives yet! so i would take the maxtor... but i have read of people having the maxtor 80gb crap out after a year or so, the reason has something to do with the fluid bearings...

what do you guys think ?

many members here showing interest in wd and maxtor drives with 8mb buffers. the wd version certainly comes with a 3yr warranty if of interest.

increased price would be an issue with these drives

thanks for the reply ris, yeah i was looking at then 8mb drives, the maxtor is $162, the speed doesnt *really* matter to me that much, i just need the storage and i dont think it would be worth the extra money for me

i have a seagate baracuda 4 so i'd be biased if i recommended it, but it has been a very good drive so far - quiet, fast and no problems.

Lately most of the major HD companies have had similar quality control on their flagship models- i.e. a 60GB 8MB cache Maxtor drive is no more reliable than a similar Western Digital or IBM (yes, I believe they have gotten their act together after the merger) or Seagate. Traditionally, Western Digital and IBM have had slight leads in speed with Maxtor coming in second and Seagate last. But in real world usage, you'd never see a difference. Noise levels are pretty similar among all of the drives as well. It comes down to preference and price.

Well, this may be a dumb question K62, but do you have a Best Buy near you? I don't even know if they have stores in Canada, but I remember seeing an ad for a Maxtor 120 GB 8mb Buffer for 69.99 after rebates. Didn't know if this was an available option.

As a previously satisfied user of WD and IBM drives, I went throught the same dilemma about two months ago (most of which can see here)

I settled for the exact Maxtor you spec'd and I've lost no sleep. It really is quiet, too. I must not have been alone on my choice because two vendors were back-ordered on the 80Gb at that time. Kind of a back-handed compliment.
