    Will these keep my cool?

I just sorta splurged and spent $50. I purchased a Thermaltake SK-7 ($20), and two Thermaltake Smart Case Fan II ($10 each), and some screws. also bought a cheap SVC bb 80mm fan. the one smart II fan is going on the heatsink and the others for the case.

did i purchase foolishly? my temps are high and the tornado sounds are annoying as i have a volcano 5 right now, and i have my case cover off because i have no case fan at all.

    what do you think?

You did a good thing by buying an SK-7.

I have an SK-6+ with an 80mm Thermaltake Smart Fan II on it, and it is a wicked cooler. With the fan at 3000rpm, and the overclock in my sig, my temps under load are 49*c.

The SK-7 should be even better, and having a case fan to blow the air in will lower your case temps even more.

Perhaps it would be a good idea to have the other smart fan at the front of the case, as these fans are almost silent upto about 2500rpm and would allow you to change the fan speed depending on load conditions of your machine.

Also, are you aware that your processor should be running at 1.6GHz?

yeah, it should be running at 1.6 and it probably isnt using its hyper-threading technology stuff either. funny cause at idle it still has a temp of 52c.

but the a7v doesnt support a 133fsb, so its a no-go on 1900+ support. they say it isnt even supposed to run, but it works fine at 1200mhz. I think the highest i had it was 1.5ghz but it didnt make it very far into the winxp boot screen.

Oh yeah, i am also running 3 sticks of ram. 1 stick of 256mb 133mhz, and two sticks of 128mb 100mhz. Funny thing is i got it all to run at 133mhz stable.

I consider my setup running good and lucky for now. A future $200 upgrade will buy me a nforce2 board with 512mb ddr and of course that would let me run my 1900+ speed.... ohhhhhh i can only imagine.....

Ah ok. I thought it might have something to do with a motherboard limitation, but just wanted to make sure

Hope you get an nForce 2 board soon, coz these chips overclock like anything!!! Well ok, maybe not as far as a 1700+ TBB, but mine does 1.7GHz at 1.85v

hell, i just hope i can get it to 2000+ status, you think its possible? how high do you think this 1900+ AGOIA might go?

The XP 2000 chips run at 1666/1667mhz so you could actually probably get to it on stock voltage. Before I burnt my chip in, I could get to 1610mhz on standard voltage, so you should hit 1666mhz no problem.

MuFu has an XP 1800 which does 1850mhz at 2.1v so I guess it depends on the chip and its tolerances.

With that cooler you have there, you may well be able to hit 1.7ghz or even higher.
Depends on what motherboard you get and how far it wants to go.

well, mistakenly ive had this chip running at 2.1v stable, so it might be a good overclocker

Maybe you should have spent the money on a new motherboard and memory.

Good cooling choices though. It should work very well for you and be nice and quiet. With that CPU speed you should be able to drop the voltage to 1.4v and still be stable. That should keep your temps down a bit.

All three of the 1600+ AGOIAs I had did 1.75GHz on default voltage, 1.8GHz on 1.8v, and 1.85GHz on 1.85v

I would agree with Todd a that you could probably undervolt that chip quite a bit to reduce temps further. With that new cooling and an undervolting, I wouldn't think that chip should get more than 3-4*C over ambient case temps...

yeah well i really dont want to touch it because the heatsink mount (the plastic part the cpu sits in) is busted, or worn out. it BARELY holds the metal clip, actually it doesnt look like it has any lip at all to hold, but it is. it might have something to do with the temps.

I picked this board up off ebay as a possible DOA. paid $25 shipped. works perfect though. guy said he burnt a cpu on it and never tested the mobo to see if it had fried too.

was a good upgrade for me at the time as i was using a scummy chaintech aja2e. was able to resell that one for $80, so i almost made money on the upgrade.

Oh man, i really really really need to fork over that $200 for a new mobo and ram..... i keep thinking about it and never do it.

    edit: another thought:

of course then looking at my specs, a nforce2 board and ddr ram would just make me SCREAM for a $150 video card..... oh the endless upgrades

One thing you will like is the SK-7 uses all three tabs on each side of the socket. That should help even more.

I'm gettin there DC Very slowly

I agree with Todd a and DuronClocker about the undervolting... my chip did 1.6v at stock voltage nicely and max temps under load were about 40ºc with the fan on 2300rpm

Also, as Todd a said, the 3 clips on each side of the SK-7 will keep it on the socket excellently. I have never had a single clip heatsink on my Athlon, and basically, wouldn't want to.

no heatsink yet- svc compucycle screwed up my order apparently. i orderd on saturday and that same day they gave me a tracking number. yesterday the tracking number still wasnt showing up on ups and so i emailed svc. they wrote back today with a new number and said nothing but "sorry for the inconvienence". the new tracking number says itll be here on friday.

i wrote back to them asking what happend, saying not that its a big deal, i just like to know what went on.... and they say it shipped on monday..... im not sure if i believe that, ups almost always gets to me in 3 days even from california.....

    hmmmmmmmmmm
