HP 8200i CD Burner Problem

I was attempting to install a program for my son (Winnie Pooh or something) for him to play on the computer. While the game was installing, I got some weird error that I had never seen before. When I clicked the "OK" button, the computer rebooted. Now, the CD-Rom will not "read" any CD's. The drive is recognized in the CMOS and by Win XP Pro, but any CD inserted, will not read. Do I need to re-install windows to fix?

you can try reinstalling the driver,in the device manager.
you dont need a driver,winxp has one for it.
and reinstall the software.

of coarse if you broke it and its your only drive you wouldn't be able to install windows

Thanks...I think. I got a new HDD so I formatted and reinstalled windows since the timing seemed perfect, but still no dice. The CD will NOT recognize any disc placed in it. It will try to read, but never actually shows anything, the light blinks and you can hear the CD spinning. Windows XP shows it as working and during the boot, it does get picked up. System Info shows it's working properly and there are no problems. Is there any programs or anyway to test if the unit just went bad?

Try going over the Hardware installation guide at HP's site and see if you can find a clue.

Another method of diagnosing problems is to look in the

• control Pannel
• Administrative Tools
• Event Viewer
• Application Log or System Log

for error messages or clues to the conflicting hardware or software.
