NEC CDR-C251 Cd Rom

I've just stuck the above in my pc, its been sat in a old pc for years in my garage. It's recognised at boot up and in winxp but it seems a bit cranky. I know its old but it won't recognise CDR media, in fact it doesn't recognise most cd's. Has anyone got one working okay, or is it destined for the bin?

That CDROM drive would not meet the more current Multiread format, standard that dictates reading of CDR and CDRW discs...

Have you cleaned it? A drive that has "sat in a old pc for years in my garage" is likely to be pretty dusty. One of those cleaner discs may do the trick. If it still "doesn't recognise most cd's" at that point, then off it goes.

I had an NEC 4x in a machine years ago and that model number sounds familiar. It read write-once discs OK, but not erasables.

It may need a clean, it struggled like mad to even recognise a windows cd.
