Not booting into windows when OCed

I have been overclocking my system for a few weeks now trying to slowly milk more power out of it. Thus far I have gotten it to run stable at 9X 204. The trouble is, I would like to get it on up to 10X 200 or so.

When I try to run 9.5X 200, it will post just fine, but it will not go into windows. It will just go back to the post screen and loop like that till I change it back to 9X.

Anyone have any idea what I can do to help with this?

XP 1700 TBred
Kingston PC2700 (7-3-3-2.5)
Asus Geforce4 4200 (270/520)
Using onboard sound and NIC

I have my Vcore set to 1.65 now. I am not sure if I should go any higher or not. What is the general limit to the Vcore for a 1700 TBred?

What kind of cooling you have?

1.75 should be safe even with stock cooling, and that should get you alot closer to the speed you want.

I've seen people with water-cooling go up to 2.2v. On a good air cooling setup, I'd say that 1.8-1.9 is about the limit.

Your northbridge voltage may be holding you back too. I know on Epox nForce2 boards, you have to increase vdd from 1.55 to about 1.65 to get over 200MHz stably. I don't know if you have to do the same on the Asus boards or not. I've also noticed with my Epox board, that as you approach the limit of what your cpu can clock to, your max fsb starts to go down. I can run one of my sticks of ram at 230MHz at low cpu speeds, but as I get past 2200MHz, the system becomes unstable so I have to back the fsb down to 220MHz.

The FSB I am using now is 204 which is perfectly fine. I am trying to raise my multiplier up from 9 to 9.5. This is where I have the trouble. My goal is to eventually run at 200 X 10.0 to get 2.0 GHz.

I get problems when I up the multiplier though not when I up the FSB. I am perfectly happy with my 200 MHz FSB

Will upping my vcore and vdd help with this issue or would it be something different since it is my multiplier that is causing the issue not the FSB.

Perhaps I should also consider a fan for my NB and SB. Thus far though I have had zero errors or trouble from the CPU or the mobo. The only errors I used to get were from my memory, but bumping the settings back on it solved that. This makes me think that heat is not an issue for me at this point.

9.5*200 is 1900. If your tbred is an A stepping, you might need 1.80 to 1.85v to run stably at 1900mhz. My AIUGA needs 1.825 to run stably in win2k at 1904mhz.

Your problem is that the chip can't run that high with the voltage you're feeding it. Give it 1.75, and see if the machine will boot and run at 9.5.

I will try to bump the vcore up to 1.75 a bit at a time and see if it will run. Then I will try to vdd. If not I will just have to be happy with what I have...unless I can talk the wife into that water cooling setup I have been eyeing...drool

Try 1.675v, if you get further than before, its likely voltage, i'd say around 1.7-1.75v should sort you out.

See what the limit is for the CPU first. Lower the bus speed to something like 166Mhz and up the multiplier. You might be able to hit 2.2Ghz and run your memory more agressively and turn out with better performance in the longrun.

So far I am able to boot up and run stable at 200 X 9.5 with the vcore set to 1.725 and the ram set to 2.8 (7-3-3-2.5T).

I will try to play with it more today and see if I can lower the FSB to 166 and use an 11 multiplier and set the ram to 6-3-3-2 or better. I am not sure if I will get better performance with the higher FSB or lower FSDB with better ram settings.

What is stable for you? Being able to go on the internet or are you able to prime for hours without problem?

stable thus far is running 3dmark01 se with no crashes. plus the system stays up 24/7 with no restarts.

anyone have a link to prime so I can try it out?
