Why my monitor is so lousy?

I've just changed my resolution to 1152*864 32bit color. and i only have a max of 75hz refresh rate. And the horizontal adjusment setting is already at 100% . Is this normal for a 17" monitor or mine is just plain lousy?

Not state of the art, but my SyncMaster 700s only did 60 or 66Mhz I think at 1280x1024. My new MAG does that at something like 85, but only 60 at 1600x1200. I was looking at a KDS 19" monitor for $140 at NewEgg ($30 shipping) for a friend that wants me to build a system for hime (Shuttle SS51G based system likely). It could do 1600x1200 at 75hz. With shipping it is a bit more than what I paid for my MAG 19" ($150 plus tax at Best Buy about 6 months ago). The color is bueatifull, but I would have liked a little higher refresh at 1600x1200.

If the monitor is Philips 107T21 then it is a 71Khz monitor

If you divide that by resolutions vertical number in your case 864 you get the max frequency that monitor is capable at that res.

In the case of 107T Philips: 71000 / 864 = 82Hz

or 90Hz at 1024x786

You can try maxing up that res with program like "Hztool" for example (kinda old but if you search around the net you should be able to find it)

BTW monitor that doesn't support high frequency isn't necessairly bad it just means you are limited to lower resolutions

(I have 15"LCD so everything above 1024x786 is out fo me )

Aslo you might want to make sure you have the right drivers for your monitor installed. I know WindowsXP can be a real flake about avaluable refresh rates and tends to want to pick them for you. On my #3 system I have a very old monitor that only does 800x600 at 60Hz. Well Windows XP will not run the desktop below 800x600 ad forces it to 85Hz refresh rate at that resolution. Man is it a pain to go in and adjust the refresh rate when you are loking at 3 overlaping images. Then when you play a game it does the same thing. I could only play 3D games at 640x480 until I got a little utility that let me lock the refresh rates for each of the resolutions I wanted. Now I can play all my games at 800x600.

If the monitor is a lower end model, the refresh rate seems to be quite normal. I have a Samsung Samtron 76V (paid around US$155 for it) and it has those refresh rates:

640x480 - 120 Hz
800x600 - 100 Hz
1024x768 - 85Hz
1152x864 - 75Hz
1280x960 - 60Hz

Usually higher end monitors allows for higher refresh rates across all their resolutions.

Manual says it can do 1024*768 at 89 khz basically its not that good at all.

F_A_L_C_O_N, you forgot one part of that formula. You must then take 95% of your final number to give you the actual refresh because it takes about 5% of the total time to go up to the top and start the next screen.

V = H/R * .95

Where...
V = vertical refresh (in Hz)
H = horizontal refresh (in KHz)
R = resolution (second number, so "1200" for "1600x1200")

My monitor, some piece of crap 17" CompUSA monitor I got about a year ago for $130 can only do 1024x768 @ 60Hz. 800x600 @ 85Hz. I use 800x600 every day, but I wish I could run 1024x768 at at least 75Hz. Next thing to upgrade will be my monitor. Probably a 19". I would have ordered a new monitor this weekend but I had to replace my 8500 Can't live with these crappy onboard Intel graphics comparable to a TNT2 Ultra..

BTW since you are on the market for 19", do you know anything about HP 91 monitor (SOHO or essential os something like that series)

A friend needs cheap 19" monitor and I could get one of those for about 180$ US (2,5 years warranty remaining)
