I cant get my avatar to work!!

This is my first stab at loading up an avatar and its just not goin well

I've created a .bmp pic in paint that is 50x50 pixels in size and is 7306 bytes.

But it says its too large, and has to be 50x50!!! But it IS.

Even used paint to change its size to 49x49, but still no go.

I've loaded the pic upto my webspace and given the addy for it, but it just says its too big, gotta be 50x50.

Now I know this aint rocket science, so whats goin wrong??

"Note: the maximum size of your custom image is 50 by 50 pixels or 20,000 bytes (whichever is smaller)"

    Might check the file size.

    Sorry, short fuse
Messed around trying to get an image down that small, and it wont load.. Oh well.

I'll try it as a .jpg.

Yeah, there's another bit of fine print on the upload page - JPG and GIF files only.
