I mostly just play games on my PC at home. I know this has been posted alot but since then there has been alot of changes. So just what O/S to you think is the BEST for GAMING ???

Used to be 98SE for sure, but unless you play a lot of legacy stuff, WinXP is pretty much there or within 1-2fps of it in most cases. Plus, the latest games can be real resource hogs and WinXP can shuffle resources a hell of a lot better than Win9x ever could. You get an overall boost in system stability and will often benefit from the most frequent driver updates/leaks compared to other OS's (one of the reasons why I'd pick it over 2k).

W98SE - I'll always use it there is nothing better. It's stable for me.
There are some of my games that didnt work on XP. I didnt get to try them all. FIFA 2002 sorta worked. NFS: Porsche Unleased didnt work at all couldnt even install it. Along with my ROXIO (adaptec) CD copying stuff. Counter-Strike had problems exiting where it would lock up once you left and sometimes it would use up to 100megs of ram and lockup (oh btw i have 384megs not 128megs now did when i used xp also).
Everyone has their own opinion just stick with the one that works for you best. You'll probably have better luck with your games working on W98SE simply because it has been around longer.

Another vote for 98se, if we're talking about an OS only for gaming. You'd be hard pressed to find a PC game that won't run on 98se, from the oldest DOS game to the latest shooter. The OS is pretty lean so you're gonna get good frame rates, etc.
Of course, how many PCs are only for games? Most gamers also surf the net, listen to music and watch videos, and even *gasp* work once in a while. For multiple tasks, XP is probably better -- what you lose in DOS games you gain in stability, memory management, and cool features that are good for gamers like 'driver rollback'.
Another factor to consider is the Microsoft 'sleaze factor'. DirectX 8 doesn't work with Windows95. If MS wanted, they could make DX9 incompatible with 98se. I don't think they'll do that....but I'd be very suprised if DX10 is compatible with ANY Win32/9x OS from Microsoft.

I've used 95, 98, 98SE, 2000, and XP Pro for gaming and without a doubt XP Pro is the sh!t!! I love this OS. Sh!t, I even got Doom II to run on it! As for:

NFS:PU runs great on my machine so does Counter Strike. As for Easy CD Creator, well it sucks *** and should never be used anyway. That's Roxio's problem not XP's.
Really XP is the way to go. I thought I'd have to keep 98SE around for some games but I've since ditched 98 all together and I'm using XP Pro exclusively. Just an AWESOME OS! Linux has its work cut out for it.

All the things you mention work under XP, BTW. Roxio needs a patch, and NFS needs to be run in compatibility mode (or have "gimme.dll" deleted from the game directory). Counterstrike and FIFA 2002 both work fine.
I just think that for games you want to really be able to optimise your system for the best possible performance. In my opinion, this is much easier under XP/2k than it is under 9x/ME. I don't think driver support is a problem anymore. I'm sure much more work goes into XP driver development than "legacy" driver development.

Stable and nice-looking, WinXP is a great OS. However, I did encounter some problems with it that I never experienced with Win98 (first edition, SE is just slow and buggy...).
So, Windows 98 First Edition it is.

Once you get all the updates XP is great! I have the home version and it plays most games without a patch. Half-Life original will not even install w/2000 SP-2 or XP without an upgrade patch. 98SE works well for all games, but its too boring to me anymore. I think once a person goes to XP, gets it running smoothly, they will never go back to 95,98SE or ME. Win 2000 SP-2 is also excellent, but I bought XP home so I'll use it. One of the best features is the logon screen with different users on one home PC, and of course the System Restore which I've use several times.
What patches do you peeps thing is recommended to install for XP ?

At my gaming cafe, I have finally converted all 12 computers over to Windows XP, and have to say that this is the best OS for gaming in my experience. Before I had Win98 and ME, and they both gave me problems. XP is not perfect, and I have seen some errors, but unlike 98 or Me, which usually give you a BSOD, you can close the game and restart it if need, instead of restarting your system. I recommend Windows XP (Pro or Home, though I run Pro at my cafe).
