XP and Half Life not seeing the CD key

i got a e-mail from my brother, im going to copy and paste:
Do you know anything about Half life not being able to see the CD for CD KEY authentication when played for the first time in Windows XP corp?

Funny thing was, unreal turnament did the same thing.

Didnt see any errors in device manager, and the games otherwise installed just fine from the CD.

    any ideas?
i play half-life and i installed it a few times on xp without a problem.

    i think the specs are:
    abit kt7
    amd duron 600mhz
    windows xp pro

    MSI k7t266 pro2
    AMD xp [email protected]
    geforce 3
    creative audigy platinum

CDkey is not valid...meaning it was not a retail key.
also, you can manually edit the cd-key under the system registry, if that helps
