I wouldnt recommend Ground Control or Battlezone 2, those were very bad IMO, I'd grab Red Alert 2, Tzar, Kohan: Immortal Sovereigns, or Startopia, those are all very good games.

I loved Ground Control, I just wish I could get the addon pack down here instead of paying AU$60 to get it from the UK. It's a very different type of game though - no traditional resource management and a much bigger emphasis on tactics. Maybe call it Real Time Tactical instead of RTS.
I played the Sacrifice demo the other day and that looked interesting too. Again, it's RTS with a twist.

The type of game I am after is one like StarCraft or Total Annihilation, where the emphasis is more on battle than resource management (although resources always come into a stratefy game)
Thanks for the replies, I'm now looking into Ground Control and Earth 2150

I won't bore you with my system specs..
I've never seen anything to beat Jeff Waynes War of the Worlds myself, best strat I ever played by a very long way 'cause its not constrained by the usual mission structure which has plagued the RTS genre since Dune II - Battle for Arakis. Plus its fun to show those martian scum what a 12" naval gun can do
