I heared bad things about DirectX 8.0a. What do you guys think about it? should I install it, or I'd be better off with DirectX 7.0? Just seeking better game performance and better joystick calibration.
I'm using Win98SE, no graphics accelerator card.

I installed DirectX 8 not so long ago andit caused my joystick to stop being detected. It might be cos I have a Sonic Vortex 2 soundcard, and Aureal went bust so they have stopped supporting it. Anyway, I went back to DirectX 7 since I didn't need 8 and I get slightly better performance with 7 and all is fine again.

It happened to me also when I downgraded fron DX8 to DX7 (No problems with DX8,I just wanted to see how my new graphics card would perform under DX7) and after installing the new DirectX my gamepad wasn't working. Then I found my gameport wasn't shown in Device Manager (even though my gamepad is USB).
Just reinstalling soundcard drivers solved the problem. It may help if you're forced to install DX8 to run a game and want your joystick working

I wondered why I could find no support for my vortex2 card. Pity that most info I can find on it actually rates it above most creative EAX cards. Could creative be doing the microsoft in the sound card world? whats next, will they be supplying their own mp3 player software with their cards and forcing you to use it
