Um wow. I would say the PS2 and Gamecube would get around the 3500-4000 range in 2001. X-Box would get maybe like 400 higher. Or maybe 800 higher. It's just a guess. Just remember that thing is carrying an advanced version of the GeForce 3. Low res or not, that is some serious hardware.
Cough. Everyone seems to mention graphics a lot. I mean is this really the most important part of a game for you hardcore pc gamers? I'm not saying it's necessarily bad, I think graphics matter too. But I would NOT want to play at 1600x1200 if all there were to play are a bunch of fps and rts. I can get the sports games with any console.
I like Unreal Tournament, but I also like Final Fantasy, Chrono Cross, Zelda, Smash Brothers, Street Fighter, Castlevania, Twisted Metal, Metal Gear Solid 2, Mario, Gran Turismo A Spec, Star Fox, Ninja Gaiden, F-Zero, Soul Calibur, Panzer Dragoon, Sonic, Earthbound, Legend of Mana, Devil May Cry, Resident Evil, Ridge Racer, Tony Hawk, Metroid, and WAAAAY too many more.
And a lot of these games you ain't going to find on a PC until maybe 2-3 years later when someone makes an emulator and DVD-R becomes more affordable, AND you spend even more money to upgrade your PC so you can play it at more than 10 fps. Thank you but I'll keep both my PC and my console. It's all in the name of variety anyway.
In the end, the graphics on a PS2, or an X-Box, or a Gamecube can amaze me just as much as Q3 running at 1600x1200. And I won't need to spend $500-800 to upgrade so I can play it at a decent FPS.
Have to agree with Damien, to buy a High Geforce 3 right now costs $429 retail, to buy an Xbox with a high powered Geforce 3 is $299, and it will have cable modem abilities, online gaming and awesome graphics for years to come with no more cost in upgrading hardware, cept for buying the games and controllers, you need to spend over 400 bucks to keep your PC top of the line, and a lot more than that if your lacking in Ram and a processor.
consoles will always be better in that aspect, but in the end its all about the games, and you will NEVER NEVER be a hardcore gamer if you say the PC is best and will never buy a console, there are too many AWESOME games on consoles that kick PC's games butts all over the place to say your sticking with your PC. Take any of Square Softs rpg's (except for FF VII and VIII), you wont find these on a PC and they are some of THE best rpg's around. If your a hardcore gamers and rpger you cant NOT have a console! I do and I'm glad I do cause I'd miss out on some of the BEST GAMES available

One more thing you guys are forgetting... or maybe someone has already said it but I just missed it. You can't compare a console to a PC like that just doing 3DMark2001 or whatever. A PC has to run windows and all the other bullsh!t, a concole is just a game thing, it doesnt do anything else. Do u get what I m trying to say?
ok ok, I got it worked out. A console's sole purpose is to run games, it does not have to run games under windows and all that. All the games made for a console is of course specially written to perform the best it does right? Thats why you cant compare it. Think about it, Street Fighter Alpha runs so smoothly on the arcade, which has real real crap hardware, but when you run the game with an emulator on a beast PC, it still doesnt match up. Why?
Yeah you can't compare em' in current state. I was thinking about this today, what we need is UNIX for servers, Windows for users, and a gaming OS for ourselves. We need something that takes all the overhead out of the OS other than hardware support and some other necesary stuff.
BTW: I havn't looked into the X-Box to much but if Microsoft keeps to its star form it will be the first console to ever display the Blue Screen of Death (I could be full of it but isn't it even running some twisted form of windows???).
reading the responses really shows the #1 problem with gaming today. All anyone cares about is graphics. The only thing you hear about the games these days is graphics. Just about the only difference between a game that came out today and one that came out 6 months ago is graphics. I love cool graphics and I want everything in the games to look realistic, but how about some good games? Some (new) storylines? Some creativity? Maybe even a new genre?
And to make sure my post isn't completely off topic, I'll says something about PC vs console. PC games are great, especially with all that amazing graphics, but if you really think about it, the PC games that really stand out are mostly FPS games. That's why I have to have my console, for everything that I can't get from PC.

To say the truth, many of you "Hardcore" PC Gamers are living in a hole. How can you be a gamer if you don't even own a console? For people who spend $400 on a Playstation 6 years ago, they are still playing all the latest games like GT2 without any problems or upgrade. How about you? You probably upgraded your CPU, Motherboard, Hard-Drive, Video Cards 2-3 times each during that 6 years, and spend over $2500-4000 over the 6 years period. Now you tell me, which one is a better deal?
You can NEVER find good games like Street Fighter, Final Fantasy(RPG), and GT(Racing) in computer. All you get from Computers are those boring FPS with better graphics... Big deal, better graphics... same old Crappy lame *** story...
I'd keep my computers for some good computers games, and have a console for other good console games. PERIOD!
If you are too cheap to own a console, SHUT UP!

When I started this post I didn't want which is better PC's or Consoles as far as entertainment value. I myself own every Nintendo console (NEW,SNES,N64), PS and PS2 and a good gaming system. As a gamer I cover all of the terrain.
I was just curious about people's opinions on how the hardware would compare.

I hate to continue the thread, but anyone who says a console is better overall than a computer is wack! Can your console dialup and download new story lines, get new models to frag with, or share the experience with millions of other people? I think not, and even now as the PS2 and M-**** become super highway ready, neither of those consoles can keep up with what's cutting edge in 6 months. No offense, but all of you who think it costs 2500-3000$$$over 3 years to maintain a PC are really AFU. Hey, 256MB of sdram was at $36.00 on Price Watch the other day, and if that's the total difference to keep up with the latest $400 console, I think your the sucker buddy! You don't have to upgrade a video card to always get those xtra fps! Sure, $400 is a lot for a video card, but if I can improve my read/write and the amount of info loaded into memory, not even a console coming out in 6 mos can compete with my PC! In the end folks, I can't take my console to work and share the experience with my co-workers on a 6 foot screen being piped from a HITACHI $4,000.00 digital projector at 1600x1200. That's right, a 6ft screen! Suck it PS2, ya got nuttin on me! I laugh in the wake of you feeble console only(s). I guess you're the ones who are satisfied with the middle management jobs. You all say hey I got it good. What you don't realize is that while that gaming colsole may be cool, you can't watch porn on it baby! You can't talk to your buddy in Japan real time over a T-1. You can't even upgrade your console online. Hmmm, now that's something to think about. You buy the console take it home, and that's it! You buy a computer, make it roar, when you get board with it, you don't let it collect dust, you spend a small amount to upagrade that bad boy and keep it roaring. It's called owership. Oh, and one another thing before I end my .02. Anyone who says there a game and uses a joystick or joypad or whatever you Sally's use, you need to bow down. Your like the end user at a company that has to call the tech support because they used there cd-rom for a drink holder. I mean, you all say consoles are so awesome, so complex, why waste the technology with such a petty controlling device? Well, you have to don't you. Maybe that says something about the people who are making these things. They must think you're all incapable of being sophisticated! Hey, think about it!
Well, I have had almost every console that has ever came out (atari2600, Nintendo, SuperNintendo, Nintendo64, SegaMasterSystem, SegaGenesis, SegaSaturn, SegaDreamcast, SonyPlaystaion and SonyPS2). I will buy the X-Box when it comes out in september. One of the things I like about the PC is its endless tweekablety. Take a Playstaion game that runs at 320x240 on a TV and run it at 1280x1024 with Bleem on the PC, need I say more.
