DirectX 8.1

Whats the latest word on Dx 8.1? Is it worth it, or is it crap?
Anyone installed it and knows that it runs ok? I have 8.0a, is it worth going to 8.1?

Judging by the docs, they just fixed a few bugs Hopefully not introducing more in the process... heh

Knowing M$ i reckon they probably have added a few, hopefully not quite as bad as the ones they fixed.
Oh well... I read somewhere that Dx8.1 wasn't going to be released till later this year. Like in the second half or something... maybe it was the second quarter... i forget.
Nevermind. It seems to work OK.

You guys sure this version is not a beta? Run dxdiag and check to see. I heard it was not suppose to be out until fall, so you might have a beta. I got a beta of Direct x 8 once, and because you cannot uninstall direct x, or replace it with an older version, I had to reinstall everything on my computers! Just make sure it's not a beta.

I'll check as well and let you know.

Yeah its a beta copy, the final version isnt out yet, I think its making use of the new Geforce 3 architecture stuff. Not sure though.

Ran dxdiag, doesn't say beta anywhere in mine. Oh wait theres one on MFC42.DLL Beta Retail (version 6.00.8665.0000) , all the other directx files are Final Retail.
I think that MFC42.DLL may be from something else cos i do a fair amount of programming on this computer as well, so its probably from programs related to that.
DirectX Version is 8.1 (4.08.01.0579)
Seems pretty decent to me.
Yeah i heard it wasn't due till later. Ahh well. It all seems good. It wasn't released in April the first as far as i know
No viruses that i can detect.
Leave it up to you i guess.

The download site called it a beta and the user agreement calls it "PRE-RELEASE VERSION OF DIRECTX 8.1", but it seems pretty stable

of course, it also says " If you have not signed a Microsoft License and Non-Disclosure Agreement for this software, you are not authorized to install, copy or otherwise use this software. " hahahaha

Guess what guys?!?! it is a beta! To check, just change your date, the month, to a later one like November. And there you have it, direct x expired! Just run dxdiag and you will see this:



Go to http://www.ebrink.com/dxun/Direct.htm to get the prog to uninstall Directx. It worked for me, but follow the step-by-step directions TO THE LETTER!

Oh well. Hopefully another version should be available before that happens. I've still got 8.0 on CD somewhere and i'm gonna do a new install soon (New HDD) But i think i'll stick to 8.1. Doesn't seem to do any harm at all.
