    What controllers do you use?

I'm about to get back into gaming as soon as my new vid card gets here. I haven't really played since the days of multi-player DoomII and I always used a joystick. What kind of controllers do you guys use?

Mouse & keyboard is the way to go, Mitch. Keep the joystick for flight sims and driving games, but set it aside for the fps. It takes a bit of getting used to, but offers a lot better fine control

The keys you use on the keyboard are up to to- the key to a good setup is
    1) mouselook enabled (eg, you move the mouse up/down/left/right, you look up/down/left/right)
    2) autorun on. never *ever* "walk"!
    3) make the strafe left-right keys as easily accessible as forward/backward. Typically, people take the keys that were formerly for turning left/right and change it to sidestepping left/right. Generally, the best keys for this are ESDF or similar; it allows one hand easy access to a large number of keys that can have stuff mapped to them.

There's another thread on this board asking people how their keyboard is configured- you might want to check that out too, as a lot of this is just a matter of preference

Get used to this setup and you'll be fragging away in no time!

Cool. I started to use the keyboard/mouse combo towards the end of my DoomII "career", but never could get used to it. I finally got used to it while playing QuakeI, but quit playing shortly after because I was tired of our old P90 system. I've been out of the parents' house for a couple of years and finally built a decent gaming system. I've been playing Vietnam: Black Ops the past couple of days and I like it. I use the keyboard setup that you said, but I like the idea of using the ESDF config better. I'm going to go try that out. I use a Logitech Ps/2 wheel mouse, though. I've heard that there are better choices in mice out there.

I tried playing QuakeII on a PS... oh man that was horrible; the gamepad positively sucks for FPS :P I'm glad I have my mouse

Mitch: I'm using Logitech Mouseman 3-button mouse right now, and it works great for games- yours should even better, with the MW. I ordered a Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer specifically for gaming tho- it's supposed to have a better refresh rate (for finer control) but what sold me were 4 buttons + a mousewheel so I can have my 5 right-hand functions on the mouse, where they belong! eg, Jump, Crouch, Grapple, Fire and Alt-Fire. Logitech makes a good optical mouse, and the Razor Boomslanger is another good one for gaming (it feels oh-so-comfortable in your hand!) Of the ones I "test-drove" at Best-Buy, I liked the MS Intellimouse Explorer the best.

Ok, I prefer a full function joystick (like MS Sidewinder).

Some games, like Delta Force 2 use Mouse/Keyboard.

I found this combination excellent for FPS games except for this.

Ok, you have one hand on the mouse (three buttons) and one on the arrow keys. Assume that the mouse buttons are used to change stance, weapons, alt. fire, grenade etc..

Now, I need to jump, shoot and move (forward and sideways, and maybe chuck a couple of grenades in case I croak in the process) at the same time!!!!! I haven't found a good combination to do this. With my Joystick I can.

The problem with Joysticks is that you DEFINATELY loose accuracy in these games (thus the need to chuck a few grenades for good measure).

For FPS I use Gravis Blackhawk Digital Joystick for forward/backward, Strafe
    left/right, shoot, jump, crouch, use,
and an Intellimosue with mouselook on.
Works great and is very comfortable.
For racing i use my Wingman Formula
    force wheel.
For sports games we use the Blackhawk
    and a Gravis Gamepad Pro.
The only problem using three controllers
on the computer is that some games have to have the controllers in certain ID's ie
    Controller 1,2, or 3.
    Note to self;
Have to get a cool signature.

    My system:
    Abit BE6-II
    PIII600e@933(155fsb)
    Geforce 256 32mb(SDR)
    256mb by NEC
    WD Cavier 8.4GB(5400rpm)
    SBLive!
    19" CTX monitor(PL9 model)

I finally got my new video card and I can't believe how cool games look with it. I wish I got one a long time ago. I had an S3 card with 2mb on it! I beat that Vietnam game and am about to d/l Q3A to see how I am at that one. I've been using the mouse/keyboard combo. I'm using the ESDF key config which is perfect. I can't wait to start fragging some of you folks! . J/K.
    Thanks for the help guys.

    Mitch
