I have a diamond mm viper 770 video card agp2x and i want to run Grand Prix 3 with 800x600. The Test of GP3 said i should use 640x480 but that is not what i want with a viper770 32mb video card. It runs in 800x6700 mode ok but just sometimes the picture freezes (very very short), what can i do about this? I use win98 se and original viper770 video drivers.
While the video card is important, other things like processor and memory are critical for good performance. I just upgrade to a P3-700 from a Celery 500 with no other changes and the difference was amazing.
Now I can run GP3 @1024x768 with everything turned on even during wet races and my PO goes from 40-90 on average (sometimes up to 130 at the start if there are lots of cars in front). Before I could only run it @800x600 with a lot of details in the mirrors turned off to get the same PO.
I usually run GP3 @1280x768 with everything in mirrors turned off except for the textures. PO stays around 60-90 for most of the time, although at the start of a wet race this can go up to 120.
Also I overclocked my V770 from 125/150 to 160/190 (with the addition of a cooling fan of course). If your specs are way below these then I would suggest a hardware upgrade may be the only way to get better performance (assuming you have optimised windows and have the latest drivers).
Hendrik97, you should be able to get good performance @800x600 in GP3 with a Celeron 433 and V770 card.
From my experience ditching the Diamond drivers for the Nvidia 5.22 detonators (you can get them from www.nvidia.com) may make some difference. You can also try overclocking the video card using TNT Clock program from www.reactorcritical.com. As this can cause damage to the card if you go overboard, I STRONGLY recommend that you get a cooling fan for your card and take things slowly in increments of 2-3 MHz to a max of 150/180. If your computer freezes up then you have gone too far and need to back off a bit.
