Installing older version of DirectX....

Hi,

Is there any way of installing an older version of DX in Win98 without needing to re-format and reinstall the OS?...I tried DX8 and got crappy performance so I need to go back to DX7a. I already have my rig set up at its most optimum performance and don't want to start all over again...

Glussier once described how to remove DirectX:

Open REGEDIT
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft
totally delete the following keys:

Direct3D
DirectDraw
DirectInput
DirectMusic
DirectPlay
DirectX
DirectX Diagnostic Tool (not necessarily installed)

Close REGEDIT
Go in the directory Program Files and delete the directory Directx

It is still not over yet:

There is still some directx traces in the directory C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM

Delete the following files:

ddr*.*
ddhelp.exe
dpwsock.dll
dpserial.dll
dsound*.*
dplay.dll
dinput*.*
d3d*.*
dplayx.dll
dpmodemx.dll
dpwsockx.dll
directx.cpl (May not be installed on your system)
vjoyd.vxd
joy.cpl
dplaysvr.exe
dmusic16.dll
dmusic32.dll
dmusic.dll
dmstyle.dll
dmsynth.dll

(For win98 and win98SE) also delete the following files:

Go to the directory C:WINDOWS\SYSBCKP:

ddhelp.exe
ddraw*.*
dsound*.*
dinput*.*
d3d*.*
dplayx.dll
dpmodemx.dll
dpwsockx.dll


Now restart your computer and install the directx version wanted
