Light bulbs on main page

Whats the point of the light bulbs on the main page? there are generally so many posts per day that when the majority of users enter nearly all topics have new postings.

If your buld is lit then there have been changes made on the boardsince your last visit. That's about it.

I know that but because there is so many people using this forum nearly every light bulb lights up every 30 minutes.
