    Removing Thermal Pads

I've heard that the thermal pads that come with many heatsinks (such as the CoolerMaster DP5-6l31C that I am using) are fairly lousy when it comes to performance. Thus I was thinking about replacing mine with Artic Silver. Does anyone know a quick and easy way to remove the thermal pad?

Scrape off the thermal pad as much as you can with a creditcard. Then clean the heatsink base with nailpolish remover and a lintfree piece of cloth. That should remove the remnants of the thermal pad.

Expired credit card or anything that is flat is recommended to scrap off the lousy thermal pads.
Too risky to use a new one unless you're very careful with it.

I used a razor blade. Took some cotton balls and dabbed them in a 70% isopropylene solution (rubbing alcohol). Scrubbed with those for a little bit to get all of the residue off. I even had to razor blade around the core of my CPU because the thermal pad got stuck to that a bit, damn you AMD and your lousy heat transfer stuff. Switching to Arctic Silver dropped my temps some 8*C or more!
