Got a system to fix for a friend.
Abit BE6
PIII 450
128 sdram
TNT PRO AGP vid
SB16 pci
USR OEM modem
Cheap Case and 250w PS
Here is the prob. I get it to load Win 98 and loop 3D Mark 2000 for about 5 hrs. Does that fine? but restart Windows and get error message...
While initalizing device VKD:
Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer.
Ok then I format a couple more times and get the same message while installing Windows when it reboots the first time, it just stops there at that message.
Is it the cheap o power supply or what?
thanks Ramr
Start windows with a boot log. To do this, hit f8 somewhere when it says starting windows 98... thing. Then select the option to create a bootlog.txt. And then see on which driver it fails. Post it here, so that we could think of it, if you won't get the idea on the problem.
Also, does it boot in safe mode? Might be a driver problem, if it does boot.

We know that the same thing would happen. We want to know what info is in the bootlog.txt file so we know what driver/device is failing.
If you have a copy of Win95B(or C) or Win2k Pro laying around, use it instead. More stable...also, NT-base systems will give you a STOP message with 4 hexadecimal codes that can determine exactly what's wrong with it.
Thanks guys The VKD is Virtual Keyboard Device Duh?? But the real prob was 34mbs of bad sectors on the 20 gig Maxtor hard drive. Got that replaced and set it up. Now it works great. Thanks again.
