EPoX 8KHA+ or ASUS A7V266 Overclocking Options

Hi all

It's been a while since i last posted, but I'm in need of your advice.

I'm building a system, with future overclocking features. I'm going to be using the new AMD XP 1700+ processor.

Which of these m/boards would you choose? Or maybe suggest another one.

Any comments on the boards, or CPU will be greatly appreciated Is it worth going faster?

DOnt know much about the Asus, but I have heard alot of horror storys about the Epox. I my self decided to get the Soyo+ and am not regreting it. I love this board. I even threw my sound blaster out because the onboard souns is pretty good. It has the nice raid option to use other devices just as extra ide items. Overclocking on it was no harder then any other board and its pretty stable. So if your looking at cost get the Epox. If you want a good board at a little higher price go with the Soyo.

I've heard only good things about the Epox KT266A board. It is the platform used at places like AnandTech and Tom's Hardware. I have heard the ASUS KT266A board does overclock a little bit better (Epox topped out at 1692 and ASUS topped out at 1727 with the same AthlonXP), but the Epox actually performed better (and was much cheaper). Epox has a good board going for them. That is why I just ordered one for myself yesterday along with 256MB of Crucial PC2100 DDR and an AthlonXP1600+. I am shooting for 1.6Ghz (at stock voltage preferably). This should be pretty easy.

That has decided it then. I can't get the Dragon anyway cos only places I know are in the States, and they don't deliver UK

Anyway the EPoX seemed a cool board to me too. Overclockers are doing a deal at the moment XP1700+, EPoX board(new one) and CPU cooler

Yes. My Epox, AthlonXP 1600+, and 256MB Crucial DDR266 is on its way. The memory arives Friday and board and CPU come tuesday (California to Michigan Via UPS ground takes a bit). Most sites that really crank up the speed on these boards are hitting 170Mhz or more. I am shooting fo 152MHz for 1.6Ghz. Hopefully I can keep it at stock voltage and cool. A bit of an upgrade from my Duron600@900.

Argh! I'm no longer happy with my modest 152mhz bus on my MSI K7T Turbo-R (KT133A). It has some nice features, good performance, and unprecedented reliability, but it doesn't have some memory tweaks (like interleaving) like the ASUS and ABIT boards. I'm seriously considering getting that Epox board now, but that means dishing out some more money for new memory, a new board, and a new chip (I blew my last Duron 750 2 weeks ago), and that's a lot of money for an unemployed 14 year old. I haven't even gotten together $30 for the Duron 600/650 chip I want! Anyone have any old (new but used) equipment they don't need that they would be willing to sell?

Sorry my parts slide down the line of computers in my house. I will have three now. An AthlonXP 1600+ (hopefully at 1.6Ghz), a Duron600 (at 900Mhz), and a K6-2 450 (at 4x112). The first one has a SB Audigy and a GeForce2 GTS (210/410), the second has a SB PCI-128 and a Voodoo3 2000 (166/166). The third is a waste with an A-Sound 16bit and a Verge DX 4MB (those were the days).

I just ordered my parts. The memory came in today and the rest are supposed to hit toesday. I will be very busy getting three systems running (including formatted hard drives, 40, 20 and 4GB). Man my third system sucks. The only thing I need then is to replace my 10mbit router with a 10/100 hardware fireway router. Then I will be a VERY happy man. Two computers that can get 60FPS in Quake 3 (one at 1280x1024x32 and the other at 800x600x16).

In case you are wondering the Audigy ROCKS!!!! Never had a SB Live to compare with, but it still rocks. I just need to hook it up to my home surround sound system (600w, 15" woofers, 5.1 Digital Dolby...). Works wonders with crappy MP3s (new filters and such) and kicks out the highs and lows pretty damb good.
