Using Volcano 5 on XP 1700+...is it ok without paste????

I am just about to put these components together and i wonder if I should remove the pad under volcano 5 heatsink and add paste instead. What would be temp. difference and which paste could i possibly find in canada...not many brand name computer accesirues here like in the states!!!
What is the advantage of paste over pad?
please help as i am trying not to make a mistake here...its AMD chip i'm talking about and we all know how hot they get and how dangerous it is to install wrong cooling!

I would recommend that you remove the pad and add thermal paste. You can get it at Radio Shack (if they have them up there) or any electronics retailer. You can use the same compound that they use for transistor heat sinks.

If you are up to it and they do have the paste up there, you can perform the experiment for us. Try it with just the pad and then try it with the pad removed and the paste applied and then tell us and the world the results. Then you will know for sure. BUT if the pad turns out to be better, you will not be able to go back to it since it will have been destroyed during removal. DON'T go bare, make sure you have either the pad or the paste.

If you are familiar with the process, use thermal compound/grease/paste. Whatever you wish to call it.
