    keeping a fan quiet

    my 80mm psu fan is fairly noisy (it is not worn out). how can i quieten it without messing around with the electrics. is there a silencer or baffle i can buy or make?

    Hmmm... I have sapped the Original fan to an Papst 2500rpm, 19dB. Hmmm thinks that the Papst 1500rpm, 12dB canīt handle 300W psu. I would also know what to do about the PSU since I want the machine as Quite as the old Dell P2 350 Mhz.

    You could try doing a 7 volt conversion on the power, they run at 12v normally, but there is a way of modding the power to run at 7v which will make the fan quieter.

    Do a search on a search engine on the mod.

    Could be a dry bearing. Put a drop of Hoppe's gun oil on it. (K-Mart, Wal*Mart sports dep't.) Carefully peel back the label covering the bearing so you can reposition it.

    get some house insulation [12mm/25mm bats or something] and stick it to the inside of your case.
    might help deaden the noise.
