Fan aside(or actually, assuming equal fan) which is the better cooler? The FOP is a classic. It's popular and does a great job. Small and weighs in at only 200 grams. However, the WBK is bigger and I was wondering if it is a better cooler. Is it worth getting say a WBK38 over a FOP38? Personal experience with both especially appreciated.
I dont know the FOP but I do have the WBK38 and it works great! keeping my AMD 1GHz@1,5GHz 1,8V at aprox 50 degrees full load. But the FOP is older and I think the WBK is better, so I would say choose for the WBK.

The wbk is better than the fop. Its just a later more improved moddel actually. They are both kinda similar cept the wbk is bigger. However; I would opt for a newer sink using copper in part or all of the sink. I have had both the wbk and the fop and they are great coolers. My dad uses the fop on his duron rig and it keeps it nice and cool. If these sinks are your only option than I would go for the wbk. If not then I would opt for something newer as K6-III recomended. I would also recomend the gladiator and now the taisol 760 which from my tests seams to be a bit better than the gladiator (read current post). The SK6 that K6-III recomended is also suppose to be a good performer, as are various swiftech models.

With equal fans, the WBK edges the FOP by a little bit. The WBK is a newer and improved heatsink. The FOP has a smaller footprint (base) and will fit tight spaces. The fins are wider above the base on the FOP. The WBK is a larger heatsink which helps insure a slight performance gain. They both use the same pain-in-the-arse clip!
I would go for the WBK if I had to choose between them. I have an FOP and it works great though. It's on a Duron 700@960 that never breaks 41c. When mounting the clip, be careful to hold the heatsink square on the core. If it wobbles, you may crunch the core. I used an old plastic toothbrush handle with the end notched to grip the clip with. I hold the heatsink square with one hand and use the toothbrush to push down and latch the clip. Also, the clips come apart easily. The end that has the screwdriver notch in will seperate from the main clip body sometimes when attempting to mount. Because of this, I put the pressure on the main body of the clip when mounting. I had mine seperate a couple of times and have read of others having the same problem. GW has improved the clip, but it is something to be aware of. When you get it and look at the clip, you will see what I'm refering to. It's no big deal, but if it happens while using a screwdriver, you can scratch your mobo! Another reason to use the toothbrush handle!
I was just curious. Please remember not everyone needs a "jet engine" cooler. I'm not going to drop 50 bucks on a heatsink/fan combo for a machine I build for someone else who will not overclock. I've used the FOP32-1 before and that actually does a great job of cooling a 1.2 Ghz Tbird. I actually like the clips GlobalWin uses. Much better than a cheapo coolermaster or something. Sure one has to be careful and they take quite some force to snap on(I use a srewdriver everytime), but that extra force helps with the cooling and keeping the heatsink in place(especially with the 500 gram CAK model). It's not difficult if one knows what they are doing, but I will agree it's easy to crack a core if you don't apply pressure to the heatsink and hold it steady while attaching the clip.

Luds...both the wbk38 and the fop38 are "jet engine" coolers. They both use the 38cmf delta which produces the noise. And it's going to produce the same noise on any heatsink. If you are just putting this heatsink on a regular computer that is not going to be overclocked then I would use the fop32 (not sure if they make a wbk32 but if they do use that). Or maybe one of the newer coolers: swiftech370, taisol760, gladiator with a quiet fan.

100% agreed. I was just curious between the physical designs of the heatsinks. And if you read my post closely you'll see that I use the FOP32-1 because of it's excellent performance without the noise.
