When is Pentium Better than AMD ?

When it's FREE !! I just got a free pentium2 266 ( the board and chip only ) it's mounted in a slot with a heat sink that looks like it's made out of a thin strip of metal bent into fins instead of a milled block. Anyway i only own AMD systems (my 4th now) and never had a system under 300, is there any chance i can run this p2 with passive cooling ? is this the typical HS for this slot type pentium ?

I have opened up several Dell Optiplex systems and they have all had heatsinks like you have described, where it looks like a big piece of steel bent into a heatsink and screwed onto the Pentium II.

With these systems, there is only a small fan at the end of the heatsink (not in the usual location, but on the end) which merely keeps the airflow moving through the case and doesn't really cool the heatsink a lot. So, I would presume that the Pentium II you have would work fine on passive cooling only, as long as you have air moving through the (and across the heatsink if possible).

Oh course, you should check out if the heatsink gets too hot when the CPU is under full load, as the Pentium IIs in these Dells were around about 350MHz, which might make them a newer model than your Pentium II you have, so they might run cooler, but you should try it out and see.

We have bout 10 optiplex 233, 266 left at work. Thay all have passive cooling on them. I have also OCed al the 233s to 266, so they're all 266s now.

Yes, passive cooling on a PII is just fine. A friend at work had a PII 233. Strange noises came from his comp, so I guessed it was the CPU fan and checked it out while the computer was still on.

Then I saw it: The fan wasn't spinning. It probably not been doing so in several months...

The noise, however, came from his PSU.

Bet his half-way-dead-piece-of-crap-comp will give up the ghost very soon...

Update: i've been looking more carefully at other people's Intel machines lately and there seems to be two types of cooling setup on the 266/233 slot types. Mine, the bent metal HS passive coolong type. and a more typical milled aluminum+fan setup. Since i got it for free (and threw in a Vodoo3 that was collecting dust) i'm gonna stick with passive cooling to keep the cost near the $0 mark. I don't even recognize the MOBO manufacturer but it has a 100mz bus speed. Now where will i find a free/cheap ATX case w/psu ?

Kewl, you might be able to run that thing at 250 or 300!
