Help with weird power problem please....

Okay, this is an odd one.......

After running / idling for a while, my buddies machine shuts off. No warning, no increased temps, no load, it just shuts off. Then, now this gets weird, it needs to be unplugged before it will fire up again!!!
There seems to be no set time that it takes to quit either. It could be an hour, or a couple of hours. My idle temps are 36c, no screen savers are running either. This is a system that is a couple of months old. Here are the specs:

    Abit KT7
    Duron 700@935
    WDD HDD
300w PS (a generic Macron to be exact)
    Various other cards

I'm thinking the PS is going bad.....

    Any ideas guys???

I think I read something about the KT7(A)'s having wierd issues when idle. Simply making sure something is always running(SETI, Folding@Home etc.) fixes the problem.

As for the powersupply I know Storfe has one, and aside from blowing 11 out of 13 capacitors responsible for keeping the cpu voltage nice and smooth he hasn't had anything bad to say about it

(btw, neither me nor he thinks it was the psu that did it, rather the lack of fans)

    Thanks for the reply D|sElMiNk!
It has been running this way for about 6-8 weeks without a hitch, with and without a screensaver running so I don't really suspect the KT7. I'll do some more testing along those lines to test it though.

    Any other ideas guys?

I had a similar problem with my 1GHz on my MSI 6340. Altough the temp was good the PC just stopped for no good reason. It wasn't OC'ed but the chipset got that hot that it would crash. I had put a fan on and I never had it again.
Well that me be one solution for one problem, but I don't have a clue about not booting without unplugging the PSU. Just try your own PSU on his system, If that works the PSU is the problem.....

I'm no expert at AMDs, though I too would say its the chipset. Without adequate cooling in the case, those greenies crap out. Maybe try to get better case cooling or put a 20 mm fan on the chipset?

Well, I replaced the power supply with a spare I had laying around and all seems to be well for the last couple of days! I think I'll send the old one in for warranty replacement if they will give me an RMA. It's only 3 month's old! Junk hardware.....
