Kenwood drives have always been terrible to me. I bought the 52x and it sucked bad. Then I got the plextor 40x scsi drive and WOW! This drive was so much nicer then my kenwood. What you guys need is SCSI!
J1CS, I had that Acer drive as well and it died the same way. Just started taking longer and longer to access a cd and then just quit all together eventually. I have 3 cd roms including a Plextor. I think I like my old mitsumi 32x the best though. Never a problem reading any cd.
Buy a TV! Buy a TV! Buy a TV!
Let's see here... buy a DVD for your TV or your computer.. Well it performs better on the TV.. so you will pick the one for the computer right? j/k
I too got a 10X Pioneer DVD(40x CD-rom) and it is very good. With DVD decoder card(so I can output to my TV) it was 150 bucks with shipping. If you're going to spend over a hundred dollars why not get a DVD?
Also, CD-burners always seem to read really well. I have a mitsumi 4x write and 8x read and it consistantly reads at 8x and is excelent for ripping songs of CDs especially where my old 24x Toshiba would have to reread sectors or get hung up because of scratches and what not. Not the case with the mitsumi.
BTW, I have never had a good experience with an Acer CD-rom(or computer for that matter). I think Acer is pretty low quality. Just my humble opinion though.
Got it at BestBuy and, of course, their philosophy has always been "the customer is an idiot". After being roughed-up, patted down, and frisked by 'security' for being stupid enough to actually carry merchandise back intothe store* - I was directed to the 'installation desk'. The guy there is hired to interrogate customers and offer as many as 1300 reasons why its probably your own fault and maybe you haven't tried hard enough. "Did you know you may have to set a jumper on the back?" "How fast(lol) is your computer?, It has to be pretty fast to use one of these CDROM drives." "Have you tried another CDROM to see if it worked?" "blah, blah, blah..."
Anyhow, I eventually was able to obtain a refund.
I bought a 40X cheapo. I am thrilled with its performance.
*note: I wasn't abused by their security guy, he was nice actually. But you'll notice they put security about 15 notches above customer service, as far as their priorities go. I dread every visit to BestBuy. I suppose an 'informed' customer should shop elsewhere.
