Yesh @Home Cable service stinks but that's not indicative of all cable services though. @Home is suffering the same thing AOL was a year ago. Too much demand and not enough equipment/ bandwidth. Oh and for those DSL providers who promise you peak 100% bandwidth? That's only the last 0.5-1.5 miles between you and your switching station(s). DUH! of course you would get full bandwidth there, it's their UPSTREAM providers (Alter.Net, UU.Net...) that are more likely to suffer congestion.

Lar, that is exactly what I have and 384Kbps is the MINIMUM they guarantee you connect at. My speeds are nomally over 1Mbps. If you get DSL, let me know and I'll give you some registry tweaks that will totally speed up your connection. At that speed my ping in UT averages from 50-80, if the damn server I'm connecting to has that much bandwidth left over for me.
Well, I have @Home, but I get upwards of 3mbps download. Upload sucks. It all depends, if you are in a highly populated area then @Home may not be great...
If you are just a surfer get Cable, I get 300+ Kylobytes/s downloads. I wanna see any DSL beat that... BUT it SUCKS when it comes to gaming, for the most part. My pings jump alot, this is worst than having a high ping at all times. So if you are a online gamer go with DSL.

IE always gives me a endless loop of Error Messages after I have done some extended surfing (opened 15 or more instances of IE, 4-6 IEs at one time. Esp with sites that I have to LOG IN to). It has a 'core dump' and it loops the error message and after that you can't shutdown properly. It hangs at the You May Now Shut Down Your PC screen. I have to hit the power button to shut down and the next time I get a Scan Disk cos I didn't shut down properly. I reinstalled IE several times including installing a newer build over it. I am using IE 5.1 128Bit encryption.

I don't think that the question is: "which is faster cable or DSL" at all.
I think the question is: "which local provider can give me the biggest pipe, shared with the fewest other nodes".
For me, I have cable service, and I live in what I'd refer to as an "economically diverse" neighborhood. That equates to big pipe, and small competition.
Talk to people where you live, and if possible, go visit customers who have the services you are looking into. I don't think there is another good way to judge.

Free advice, and worth every penny.
I, too, have @home, but I tend to get rather speedy downloads. I average over 190 KB/s in downloads...I think I'm the only one in my 2 block area that has it, though...
