I´m tired of these ****ing sound the fan is making... Can I remove the "Original" heatsink and fan, and put for an example the AMD/Intel Socket 7´s heatsink on it and give the f... about the fan ?
I could use some glue to put it to place ! I shure got enough room for it...
My computer is a Compaq CDS 520 witch the computer chassi/case and monitor r built in together as one part... So there´s many holes at both sides so I hear the got damn fan all the time... I use as for ICQ specially... So when I´m gaming I can have a server and a gaming machine and ICQ at the same time (three machines on thye same desk hehehe)
Hope U all understand this ?!?!?!?!

I don't recommend the fan REMOVAL. If the noise bothers you, check into a different fan! A new h/s and fan should cool nicely and be QUIET!
Hey, the heatsink IS NOT gonna cool well without some type of air circulation over it!
Yes, I have three machines also, all run SETI and all are overclocked! I need cooling, and a little noise is a small price to pay for the advantages the fans bring!

Damn you..... you killed my teacher....
I don't think Grasshopper noticed that you are running a 486. In my opinion, forget the fan, if it bothers ya! You won't have any problems with a 486 DX2 overheating if you at least have a heatsink. I ran one for over 5 years without a fan OR heatsink. Touch the heatsink or CPU and you'll see that they don't really run that hot. But I do agree with Grasshopper that a new fan (for a 486) would probably be very quiet.
My mom had a 486dx2-50mhz, used it everyday up until last year. No fan on it, it has a retarded looking heatsink, just little nubs instead of fins. The processor still works fine.
Tear it off.
