why can't i run my PIII550@682!!! why people? why? my machine will post, but whenever i get the the Highpoint UDMA66 BIOS(yeah! i have a BE6 mobo!) is freeze!! i've tried 2.1V, 2.2V, 2.3, latency from 1 to 8
none of them work!!! do i need extra cooling or something??????!!!!
First off what kind of ram do you have (ie. 10ns,8ns,7.5ns..)? Next what type of CPU cooler are you using? 682MHz is really pushing that PIII550, but your best shot (using an air cooler) is the Alpha P3125 w/ cache spacers.
First off, at 682MHz the FSB will be 124 not 133 so the PCI devices will be working well within specs. As for AGP, it WILL be running at 83MHz and if you have a TNT2 you might not be able to hit the mark. A Voodoo3 and a GeForce should not have a problem with it.
First thing you need to do is take that ****ty *** Intel heatsink off and put a real cooler on it ( an AlphaP3125 ideally) if you are serious about getting to 682MHz! When you get a different cooler, mount it without the backplate and put cache spacers on it too. If you can post at 682 with the stock Intel heatsink, then you have a good chance of making 682 with the new mods. Good luck...
As for cache spacers, all they are are just cut out steal that you place between the heatsink and the cache. This will cool the cache by contact which is much better than air cooling. Here is an article that shows how to fit a PII Alpha on a PIII SECC2 ( this was before the P3125 came out); it also shows how to make cache spacers: thetechzone.com/articles/alpha_p3.htm
hope this helps.

i think i'll have to pass for the Alpha P3125! that thing cost $102CND including tax!! that's too expensive!!
i guess i'll have to give up my dream of getting my PIII550 to run at 682
Never give up. If you believe hard enough, your dream will come true. Get back to work, we don't want to see you again 'til you're running at 682. Do anything it takes to get there, make us love you.
