A "ground loop" can be a misleading term. Buzz or hum can be caused by several different things, everything from flourescent lights, SCR dimmer switches on a circuit, RFI, etc.
Depends on your speaks, soundcard, and how much cd audio playback you listen to. SPDIF may give better audio quality for audio cd playback, but that is the only advantage.
