Old soundcards (most of which are ISA) have internal amplifier, and while the newer PCI cards (even SBLive) does not anymore...

Most soundcards are Soundblaster compatible, or at least Adlib compatible (esp very old ones).
You can try to install the card as Soundblaster16 or Adlib from Windows95.
