What OS have you got ? I had the same problem and use Windows ME. Solved it with new drivers from www.soundblaster.com.

Which side?
Where the connection is - then you could probably used sand-paper or whatever as well. If the copper or whatever rusts = bad connection. Remove the rust = connection ok.
