I did check the IRQ's before posting, the soundblaster was sharing the same IRQ as my modem, I sorted this by moving the modem to another spare PCI slot.

I have upgraded to the latest drivers, for both soundcard, the via drivers and the latest mobo bios.
A sound card recommendation would be good now.
