Most professional pci sound cards sell at prices higher than $400. And there are so many brands available. I don't know why everybody is claiming that GTXP is the best one.

Yep. I also got an AWE32 and eventually I figured out it is this thing that slowed down all my 3d games to a crawl. Changing to a A3D pci card makes most of the 3D games running at least 3 times...

'16 bit sound blaster pro compatible' means you have a sound card which is 16 bit sound card, but it can emulate an 8 bit sound blaster pro so it is sound blaster pro...

Try recompile the kernel. Answer those hundreds of stupid questions, including the sound card part.
If that doesn't work, edit rc.modules file and see if it works.
