Do you play old Dos games? If not try disabling the SB Live DOS emulation in the device manager. Does it crackle in games or everything? Does the MB have a SB Link on it and are you using it?

If you pass the AC3 signal from a DVD Rom's SPDIF out to the SB Live out the SPDIF to you receiver, that should work. The problem is when you connect the digital out on the SB Live to you receiver...
