The problem with SPDIF output not working in win2k is a problem with the OS, not the sound cards. It MAY be fixed with SP2

It's a bug with win2k where you can't enable an sp-dif output. It MAY be fixed with SP-2. It affects all sound cards.

There's also DTS-ES (Matrix and Discrete) which can have a discrete centre rear channel too.

There have been no new drivers for the mx400 for win2k since frigging middle of '99 I think. That's not to say that I will buy some sb pos either. I just hope another company produces a decent...

Ah, I have the same staticky prob out of the right channel, mostly when I'm using winamp. I'm running win2k, and when i emailed s3 about new drivers they said no chance.
