Re: the 50% sound setting - I had a similar problem. Strangely it just seemed to go away one day!!! You could try reinstalling (the latest) drivers and SBLive software.

I also dont want to state the obvious, but is the volume turned up for WAV playback?
Doubleclick on the volume control in WIn95/98 to check. Also make sure none of the controls have the mute box...

Look for new drivers on the Web site of your sound card manufacturer. Also do this for your video card (this may be the problem,not the sound card).
Check Electronic Arts(?) WWW page for patches...
