it's a crappy on board sound chip; just like almost all on board sound chips.

usually it's the plug or the speaker wires that's causing the problem. check them : ]

Actually, if you enable some of the high quality sound effects, 3D sounds etc, upgrading the sound card WILL take some load off the CPU.

SB Live! cards need a driver patch to work with Coppermine CPUs. If you have a P III CPU, make sure to download and install the lastest driver from www.sblive.com

I have a similar setup, and I notice noise (mainly in games) if I have the WAV and/or master volumn (both in sound control) set to max.

on all the bench mark programs I've seen, no of them test sound singnal processing; that's why there are no difference on the test results with different sound cards.
