4.1 is better for gaming and 5.1 is better for movies

Actually, if you enable some of the high quality sound effects, 3D sounds etc, upgrading the sound card WILL take some load off the CPU.
Also, switching from ISA to PCI takes some of the data bus...

I have a similar setup, and I notice noise (mainly in games) if I have the WAV and/or master volumn (both in sound control) set to max.
