Internal Hard Drive Parts

Introduction

May 29, 1999
By David Risley

Hard Drives are one of the most important parts on your computer. They are also one of the most expensive.

The way we think of hard drives is a relatively new concept. The first PCs didn't have them. Those guys were all wishing they had the "Winchester" drives, with a whopping 10 MB of storage and about the size of a TV. They also cost a few thousand dollars! Today, the hard drive stores large amounts of data, some as large as 15 GB, and the prices have dropped along with the size.

Let's look at the hardware associated with these drives: IDE, EIDE, SCSI, and the various adapter cards. For installation instructions, check out the Drive Installation page.
