Mitsumi doesn't make too bad of a CD-Rom, but if you rely want high access time and speed go with a plextor 24 or 32 x.
Stay away from Mitsumi, since they're probably the only brand which doesn't support audio to be read in raw mode. (Audio ripping)
I've heard many say that Plextor is the best, but never actually used one. As far as I know, the only make SCSI CD-ROM's?
If you want to put it vertically, then you should consider the Pioneer DRA41S 36X. It doesn't use any caddy or tray, but just "sucks" your CD's. The speed is quite OK too.
I too want to buy a CD-rom. I am thinking alond the lines of the pioneer 36x, ASUS 40x and AOpen 40x. All are good. ASUS fastest, but the pioneer is quieter and is a slot loader...... the quest continues
