I just got a stereo that can use a USB cable connection. The only USB cable I have is one that came with an old Canon Scanner I have. The USB cable(2.0) has a round cylinder compartment that I can't open on the end of it. The Scanner that it came from had it's own power supply. Is this thing on the USB cord a fuse or some kind of voltage converter?

I called Canon tech support and they said that it is an RF filter... what exactly would an RF filter do on a USB cord?
those filters help stop EMI interference from other electrical devices. Without it, you might pick up humming/buzzing through your new stereo's speakers, from other nearby wires/leads.
RF stands for Radio Frequencies.

An RF filter will block a band of Radio Frequencies (noise): this is useful because this band of noise will interfer with the communications between the device and the PC.Quote:
