I have (for the time being, I hope) a PII/400@448 (4x112) and it's getting very hot: 54 C!!!. Is there any danger for the CPU?
Please note, my PC is always on, running at least Seti@Home 24h a day.

You are running quite hot, but you aren't going to start to boil your CPU until you get past 75C--I'd get a better fan because your fan obviously isn't able to handle the load. You should be getting temperatures below 45C. Try getting one of those P125 Alphas.

I have a PIII 500 running at 585 with an Alpha P125C. I can run Prime95 for hours and the CPU temp never gets above 32 degrees C. Make sure you get the plastic cover off though, it keeps a lot of heat in.

I've you already try RAIN, Cpuidle or waterfall pro?
That can help your computer to be a little bit cool.
Well, thank you for your replies!
I've tried Rain etc., and they do a good job. But my CPU works almost all the time at 100% (playing, rendering or running Seti@Home), so I see no deifference.
