New NEC Monitor Knows When You're There

LED Backlighting, 1080p, Four-Way Adjustable Stand

Lots of monitors have an ambient light sensor to adjust brightness according to room lighting conditions. So does NEC Display Solutions of America's newest 23-inch LCD, but the MultiSync EX231W goes that one better with a "human sensor" that detects user activity in front of the monitor and reduces its power up to 95 percent with inactivity. Users can adjust the inactivity length and sensor settings. A carbon savings meter calculates the display's reduction of greenhouse gases.

When you're not goofing off, the EX231W features 1,920 by 1,080 full HD resolution with DisplayPort and DVI-I interfaces, along with a 25,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio and 250 nits of brightness. The LED-backlit monitor combines an ultra-slim 14.6mm bezel with light weight (9.3 pounds with stand) and a top-mounted USB pass-through that permits quick connection of a webcam or flash drive.

Ergonomic features include a fully adjustable stand with tilt, swivel, pivot and 110mm of height adjustment. Dynamic Video Mode provides presets for text, movie, game, and photo applications. Power consumption is 31 watts typical, half that in Eco Mode.

The MultiSync EX231W will ship in November for $339.
