So Sharp You Could Cut Yourself

So Sharp You Could Cut Yourself

The difference between Samsung Electronics' latest 17-inch flat panel and other LCD monitors is like the difference between black and white -- or rather, the range of light intensity available between the brightest and darkest pixels, with a 1000:1 contrast ratio reducing eye fatigue while providing sharper text, deeper shadows, and brighter colors.

The SyncMaster 711T ($599) offers Patterned Vertical Alignment (PVA) liquid crystal cell structure with a pitch of 0.264mm, 250 nits of brightness, a response time under 22ms, and a claimed viewing angle of 178 degrees. The 1,280 by 1,024-pixel display pivots between landscape and portrait modes for full-page viewing of letter- or A4-sized documents, while Samsung's MagicTune software permits settings to be adjusted with a click of the mouse. Both analog and digital inputs are standard; a thin 0.5-inch bezel and removable base make the monitor ideal for tiling or wall mounting.
