S3/Diamond Rio 600 Review
Rio 600 Overview - Continued
November 12, 2001
Song titles, artist names and many other bits of information can be viewed using the built-in LCD screen. This time round it has a built-in backlight, which has the option to set different lighting times depending on preference. On turning the device on, a splash screen is shown, and next a screen displays how much memory is present, in use and which version of software is installed. Then the current battery level is shown, as a graphical meter, a percentage and estimated remaining time. At any point through these screens a button can be pressed to skip right to the play menu.
The song playing screen is very well designed, with song title, track time, current time, current audio format, current sampling rate, track number and even the volume displayed on the same tiny screen. Everything you want to know is on screen and easily understood.
Pressing the menu button slides four options onto the screen. Under the first tab--audio--different types of equalizers can be selected, from Rock to Jazz. A custom option allows user selection of bass and treble levels.
The next menu tab gives play options, which basically boil down to generating, managing and deleting play lists, plushe familiar play options such as shuffle and repeat. Menu option three holds user preferences, such as idle sleep time, back light time and the time and date setup.
The last menu option displays the memory information and battery levels, just as shown on startup.
Throughout every option and screen on the Rio 600, everything is very well laid out and easily changed. I admit to not reading the supplied instruction book for the Rio, but I managed to work out every option without a problem. Diamond has structured the menu system so that every setting can be navigated to with a just few quick selections. I must commend Diamond for the general ease of use that has evidently been a priority while designing this device.
